Description

Who do you become when connection feels uncertain?

When tension, distance, vulnerability, or uncertainty appears in a relationship, you may automatically step into a familiar role.

You might become the Fixer who tries to solve everything, the Peacekeeper who works to prevent conflict, the Emotional Caretaker who manages everyone’s feelings, or the Over-Functioner who carries more than their share. You may withdraw, observe from a distance, or become the person everyone relies on.

These relationship patterns often begin as ways to preserve closeness, approval, predictability, or emotional safety. But a role that once helped you stay connected can eventually leave you overextended, resentful, unsupported, or unable to express what you need.

The Relationship Role Awareness Lab helps you understand the pattern without shaming yourself for having it.

What This Interactive Lab Helps You Explore

You will identify:

  • The roles you tend to assume in family, romantic relationships, friendships, and collaborative settings
  • The specific role you want to understand more deeply
  • The situations that activate that relationship pattern
  • What the role may have helped you protect
  • What continuing to carry the role costs you now
  • How you want to respond differently when the pattern appears again

How the Lab Works

First, you will notice how your role may change across different relationships. Then you will select one pattern to trace throughout the experience.

The lab will guide you through the role’s triggers, protective purpose, present-day costs, and possible alternatives.  You will finish by creating one realistic relationship experiment that allows you to stay connected without automatically carrying the same responsibility. Your responses autosave in your browser as you work.

Your Relationship Role Map

At the end of the lab, you will receive a personalized reflection showing:

  • The relationship role you explored
  • What tends to activate it
  • What it has helped you protect
  • What it may be costing you
  • The shift you want to practice
  • Words you can use in a future relationship moment

You can download your completed reflection and return to edit your responses.

This Lab May Be Helpful If You:

  • Feel responsible for fixing other people’s problems
  • Work hard to prevent conflict or disappointment
  • Monitor and manage other people’s emotions
  • Take on more than your share in relationships
  • Struggle to receive support
  • Withdraw when emotions feel difficult
  • Feel valued primarily for being useful or dependable
  • Lose track of your needs while caring for everyone else
  • Want healthier boundaries without becoming disconnected

For Therapists

The Relationship Role Awareness Lab can support conversations about relational patterns, over-functioning, people-pleasing, emotional caretaking, conflict avoidance, reciprocity, boundaries, and difficulty receiving support.

Clients can complete the lab independently and bring their downloaded reflection into therapy. The completed role map may provide a structured starting point for exploring how protective relationship strategies developed, when they become activated, and how clients might experiment with more flexible responses.

This educational reflection is not a diagnostic instrument or attachment-style assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an attachment-style assessment?

No. This lab does not assign an attachment style or provide a diagnosis. It helps you reflect on the role you tend to assume when relationships feel difficult or uncertain.

Can I have different roles in different relationships?

Yes. You might become a Fixer in your family, an Avoider in romantic relationships, and an Over-Functioner at work. The lab helps you notice those differences before choosing one role to examine more closely.

Does changing my role mean caring less?

No. The goal is not to become detached or stop supporting people. It is to stay connected without automatically taking responsibility for everything.

Can I bring my reflection to therapy?

Yes. You can download your completed relationship role map and use it to begin a conversation with your therapist.
